Somebody’s Child | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Toes’

Somebody’s Child has unveiled the influence behind his new single ‘Toes’.

Speaking of the single, Somebody’s Child explained: “The song is about being in a controlling relationship, knowing what needs to change, and finding the courage to stand up for oneself and going after what you really want despite what people may think or say about you.”

To celebrate the single release, featured as our Track of the Day, we caught up with Somebody’s Child to uncover the artists who influenced the release.

MGMT – Electric Feel (Influenced drums)
The feel of the track and the drum sound always resonated with me. After some back-and-forths with the producer (Ross Dowling), we settled on this song as the main drum sound reference. The electronic sound also had a part to play in the final instrumental arrangement of the chorus.

Frank Ocean – Thinking Bout You (Influenced the Vibe)
Frank Ocean is a very cool guy. Even though he is massive, I still think he is somewhat underrated. The production on his tracks are amazing and we used a couple of his songs as a reference to try and get things to sound cooler and more modern.

Tame Impala – Eventually (Influenced arrangement, soundscape)
The end of this song is epic and the electronic producer made the song sound quite futuristic which is something that I loved. Kevin Parker is a real inspiration for me and at the end of ‘Eventually’ the song just seems to keep going which to me is extremely satisfying. I believe in retrospect this influenced the end of ‘Toes’.

Jessie Reyez – Figures (Influenced vocals, guitar sound, production)
When I originally wrote the song Jessie Reyez’ originality and raw passion influenced the attitude and snappy-ness of the vocal melody. She delivers an incredible performance. Beyond this, the dryness of the vocals makes it sound like she is singing right there with you, which is something we wanted and tried to replicate at times.

Gus Dapperton – I’m Just Snacking (influenced synth)
I think this guy is a real artist. The 80’s style synth sounds throughout his songs is really strong. I thought something similar, in contrast with Tame Impala’s futuristic sound, was a nice balance. I always try to think outside the box when producing a track and this was an idea I couldn’t get away from.
