SYML has shared the influence behind his new single ‘Wildfire’.
Pronounced ‘simmel’ meaning ‘simple’ in Wels, SYML is the alias of Seattle based artist and producer Brian Fennell who only recently discovered his Welsh roots before naming the project.
It took just one listen to be hooked on SYML sound with the song barely finishing before we were searching on Spotify for a full SYML soundtrack to our afternoon.
With the recent announcement of his debut album release, due out on May 3rd, and four UK tour dates, SYML unveiled the video for fan favourite track ‘Wildfire’.
Speaking of the single “Wildfire” Brian explained: “This song started as a gentle production, comparing the devastation wreaked by wildfire to what some experience in their everyday lives…I wrote this song when all I could see was smoke and falling ash outside of my studio. The whole west coast of the US has been dealing with wildfires since mid-summer and they have wreaked havoc. People have lost everything from their houses to their lives. It struck me that in these seasons of destruction and loss, someone might need to hear that there is hope and that they matter. There can be beauty in destruction, literally and figuratively.”
With a poignant single and stunning visuals to match, we caught up with SYML to discover 5 tracks that influenced the single release.
Vancouver Sleep Clinic – Killing Me To Love You
This song is beautiful and tragic. It gives you the feeling of release but without resolve and that’s a crazy feat.
Dermot Kennedy – Glory
I just saw Dermot’s show and I’m still recovering. This song almost bleeds at certain points.
Tom Odell – Heal
Tom’s voice is from another world. It compels you to believe what he’s telling you.
Novo Amor – Carry You
Ali is sort of a freak with how gentle and controlled he can deliver a song to your ear, but with such power! He also has the voice of a Welsh angel baby.
Hammock – I Can Almost See You
If you ever want to fall asleep crying happy tears, listen to this song. It feels like a good drunk. It holds you up.
