The Sherlocks have released their new album ‘People Like Me & You’.
Recorded at the Motor Museum in Liverpool with producer Al Groves (Bring Me The Horizon, The Reytons), the album release comes ahead of the band’s biggest tour to-date this October.
Speaking of the release, frontman Kiaran Crook said: “There’s a lot more programmed stuff, it’s not just relying on guitar, bass and drums, there’s some different sounds in there. It was the next step of the band. With our band that’s always the aim, to try to push it as far as we can, make it sound as big as we can.”
To celebrate the release, frontman Kiaran Cook shared with us five tracks that influenced ‘People Like Me & You’.
Queens of the Stone Age – I Sat by the Ocean | Listen via Spotify
That guitar riff is just a pure ear worm. Always loved the song, but really found myself play that track over and over around the time of recording our new record. I love how catchy it is but also it ability to twist and turn when it gets to the chorus. I think subconsciously I hear guitars riffs in my head a little bit different to what I did before because of that band. They seem to point out other routes that you wouldn’t usually go down because they’re not the obvious one, but in that comes a more interesting scenic route I think.
Tame Impala – Borderline | Listen via Spotify
Again, another song that’s been on repeat and without a doubt influenced some decisions on the new album. This band can take you to space and back especially in the headphones, and this track was shown to me around the time of recording by a close friend. I’d never heard it and it just blew my mind!
Gorillaz – New Gold | Listen via Spotify
Always knew Gorillaz growing up as a kid but never really delved into them. This year I just seem to have been playing the hell out of them and then came across their latest album and this song just got me straight away. The bass line is class! More than joining the dots to how that track sounds to how our record sounds and trying to see the influence, the main thing I get from this track is it’s just a proper feel good track! And I think that’s what I’ve maybe tried to inject into some songs on this record, especially the title track ‘People Like Me & You’.
Bob Dylan – Changing of the Guards | Listen via Spotify
What a record. Gotta throw abit of Dylan in there. Always listened to the ‘Desire’ record and one day just thought I’d listen to ‘Street Legal’ and this is obviously the opening track. And, as opening tracks go, I think this is well up there! It’s like a fade in and you can proper hear all the band and backing singers, pure class and talent. It’s gets the record off to a good start straight alway and definitely made me think more about how I wanted to start our new record. ‘Remember All The Girls’ was the one in the end that I think works best as an opener.
The Velvelettes – Needle In A Haystack | Listen via Spotify
One of my favourite songs. Reminds me of cooking and having a few beers in the kitchen with the tunes blasting. Always loved Motown music and think I always will, can guarantee there’s some Motown in our music without even realising. It’s just everything, the melodies, the beat. Again it’s proper feel good music. I know we referenced a Motown track in the second verse of ‘Sirens’ as a bit of a nod to it – “the guy with a northern soul, lives in the window with ‘this old heart of mine’”.
