Alex Frew | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Cobalt’

Alex Frew has released his debut EP ‘Cobalt’.

The 6-track EP is named after the colour which Alex associates to all of the emotions and the sonic palette for the EP.

Speaking of the EP, Alex said: “Dealing with introversion, depression, substance abuse, and search for romance. The colour Cobalt represents the moody, blue emotion that inspired the creation of this project, and has stuck with me for the past several years.

“I want people to feel a little bit bigger than themselves while listening to the project. I’ve always gravitated towards songs that made me feel boundless, and I sincerely hope that this collection can convey those emotions.”

To celebrate his EP release, Alex Frew shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Cobalt’.

The National – Don’t Swallow The Cap | Listen via Spotify
This song is just a masterclass in almost every way, from the immaculate production to the truly moving lyrics. I personally love the strings that are threaded through the entire track.

Pink Floyd – High Hopes | Listen via Spotify
Enough has been said about how great these guys were, but this track in particular has always stood out to me for its nostalgic qualities. The solo at the end remains my favourite solo of all time, and I doubt that will ever change.

Bon Iver – Heavenly Father | Listen via YouTube
While it’s not on any particular album of theirs, this Bon Iver song is incredibly moving. Focusing on Justin Vernon’s grapple with religion, I find the song fascinating to the core, and the melody truly makes it a cut above.

Radiohead – Lucky | Listen via Spotify
Radiohead are as famous as they are for a reason, and this song has always been a prime example of that to me. I find myself singing the opening lines to myself regularly, so it really is special to me. I love the way in which Thom Yorke approaches his lyrics, and this is one of my favourite examples of that.

Arcade Fire – Porno | Listen via Spotify
I still can’t get over how good this song is. It’s been in my top 5 for several years, and nothing has really come close to changing that. James Murphy’s production is incredible, as always, and it just makes for an addictive track.
