Copper Lungs | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Pieces of Me’

Copper Lungs have released their new single ‘Pieces of Me’.

Speaking of the single, frontman Darren Lindsay said: “The song basically wrote itself in an hour. It was one of those rare moments where the music just flows naturally, and before I knew it, I sent it to the guys and we all agreed: this had to be our next single.”

To celebrate their single release and the band’s shift in sound, Darren shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Pieces of Me’.

Nothing But Thieves – Overcome
The first time I heard this song, I just thought it was an absolute banger. The biggest thing that stuck with me was the way the chords moved in the chorus and how that made me feel alongside the vocal melodies. This definitely influenced the chorus in ‘Pieces Of Me’ in a big way. As we continue to write music, we are trying our best to experiment with different sounds and feels and Nothing But Thieves are in my opinion one of the best bands that do this right now. In the end, the song didn’t sound like a NBT song but we definitely took influence from this track and put our own Copper Lungs’ characteristics to the idea.

Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark
This might come as a surprise to those who have heard our new song but honestly, there’s something about this era of music and the synth sounds that we really love and has become a massive part of our sound. This track for me is just so direct with its delivery and that was what we wanted from ‘Pieces Of Me’. Energetic, catchy and anthemic… everything that makes the track what it is. Bruce is such a legend and although it’s a totally different genre, we like to think that we take things from all sorts of music. This song was definitely thought about when writing ‘Pieces Of Me’.

Sam Fender – Hypersonic Missiles
When we originally demoed ‘Pieces Of Me’, it felt a lot more indie than we normally go for. I listen to a lot of Sam Fender. I love how he wears his heart on his sleeve in his lyrics and writes about the real stuff in life. These two points really resonate with ‘Pieces Of Me’. This song is about that feeling of someone completing you but you can’t quite figure out how to tell them. I tried to really deliver the story of this track in the most raw way, and it’s actually something I think is a theme in our new tracks. It’s a way for me to say what I need to say in what I feel is a safe space. That’s the feeling I get from Sam Fender’s tracks, and it definitely helped me write ‘Pieces Of Me’.

The Band Camino – Daphne Blue
This track just hits me – the massive chorus and the stripped back verse. Everything about it just hits me in the soul. This is what we wanted from our new single. I have to admit this track is on repeat in my car far too often. The way the band uses the synths to fill that space in the song is something we stole for ‘Pieces Of Me’. We wanted the verse to be almost simple; it left so much space for the lyrics to really shine in amongst the ambient layers of the synths. We hope that using these sounds brings people into the emotion of the story we are trying to tell. I wanted people to have the feeling I have when I listen to ‘Daphne Blue’.

Kids In Glass Houses – Matters At All
This band, honestly, is my favourite band of all time and their music will always have influence over the way I write. This track in particular just has such a massive sound. I’ve always been a sucker for a huge chorus and no matter how much we are developing our sound, we always want to deliver that hook for people in the way that KIGH do. The chorus and outro of the new track deliver that wall of noise and live rock band feel that KIGH do so well. I saw KIGH live in Glasgow last year for their return tour, and the amount of singing along and energy in the room blew my mind and we hope to have that with ‘Pieces of Me’.
