The Outlaw Orchestra have released their third Studio Album ‘La Familia’.
The third release from the 3-man band has seen a change their studio and production, with the influential Rogue Studios’ Alessio Garavello at the forefront.
Speaking of the single, frontman Dave Roux said: “The new album has a harder rock edge to it, but also a lot of subtlety, mixed with a little angst and rebellion. It’s taken 12 moths to come together – but it’s still a photograph in time of where you were and the mindset you were in – ‘La Familia’ reflects this feeling.”
To celebrate their album release, Dave shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘La Familia’.
Ozzy Osbourne – Killer of Giants
Basically anything from Ozzy Osbournes ‘The Ultimate Sin’ album. The title track has such a blistering outro that it completely influenced the track ‘Holy Ground’. Jake E Lee in my opinion was the most diverse and interesting lead guitarists Ozzy ever employed, he just comes up with impossible solos, I wanted to capture that ferocity and energy into a track, ‘Holy Ground’ almost nailed it.
Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt – Old Outlaws Like Us
I heard Travis Tritt play this live when I was in Alabama one time, it was a large field with 60,000 folk in it, this song was everything that was badass about Outlaw Country music. It’s basically heavy metal attitude with a cowboy hat and boots on. It’s having a few years under your belt, knowing that you know better but just let them go ahead and make mistakes, you don’t even need to say ‘Told You So’, they’ll know.
Iron Maiden – Infinite Dreams
It is so atmospheric and took me back to my days of climbing into a ruined castle with my mates to listen to Maiden and smoke a few ahem….cigarettes, we’d put Maiden on the boom box and stare up at the stars. Pete had a cool riff and idea for a song that was so 70’s and Neil Young in style yet the mid section loaned itself to some of that infinite atmosphere. The track is called ‘El Dorado’, we nailed it.
Dire Straits – Private Investigations
I’d never confess to this, Dire Straits are who your folks listen to. That was until I sat and listened to Mark Knofler talk and realised the genius and poetry of his song writing without even touching on his guitar wizardry. ‘Private Investigations’ has so much muscle, the chord changes, the guitar lines, its a trip. It totally influenced the track ‘Sunday Drivers’, if only I could pass myself off as Knofler, I almost nailed it.
Elton John – Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting
The title says it all, Elton in top gear 1000 mph like a ‘Rocket Man’, this is 70’s partying in a nutshell. I had the basics of a track for the song ‘Outlaw’ which I’d recorded in a Metallica format, probably too heavy at that stage. Pete brought in these guitar riffs that turned it all around and suddenly Metallica had left the room but 70’s glam/party rock came in. Its a banging track and not dissimilar to ‘Saturday Nights’ I reckon we nailed it, not forgetting to mention the drums on our tracks are banging (obviously).
