Hugo Joyce | 5 tracks that influenced ‘False Hope’

Hugo Joyce has released his new single ‘False Hope’.

The new single is a feel-good break up anthem, written alongside writing partner Tom Althorpe.

Speaking of the single, Hugo said: “The song is essentially based on a break up. I was with someone who didn’t feel the same way that I did and it’s about me slowly coming to a realisation that the relationship isn’t sustainable. It’s better to be by yourself than hold onto someone who doesn’t want you. I think the track is extremely positive and almost inspires you to go out and take what you want!”

To celebrate his single release, Hugo shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘False Hope’.

Rag and Bone Man – Human
My writing partner (Tom Althorpe) and I were in talks with someone from a publishing company and about to pitch a few songs. However, at the time I felt we missed a hard hitting, gritty song. At the time, I felt we lacked a ‘Rag and Bone Man’ type vibe of a song and this is the song that was in my head.

Dermot Kennedy – Power Over Me
I love Dermot Kennedy, I think he’s a phenomenal artist with a brilliant voice and punchy catchy songs. However, ‘Power Over Me’ has some real punch and I remember wanting the same for ‘False Hope’.

Rhys Lewis – Wish I Was Sober
Again, like ‘Power Over Me’ this song from Lewis has a lot of punch. It has a driving beat that makes you want to dance and move but it also has this old school feel to it that I really like to.

Elton John – I’m Still Standing
This song didn’t influence ‘False Hope’ but Elton John is without doubt my biggest influence and the reason why I got into music. I used to listen to his records on my portable CD player and think to myself how I’d love to be able to write songs and sing like Elton. So he is the reason ‘False Hope’ is here in the first place.

James Bay – Hold Back The River
I loved how this track starts stripped with just the guitar and vocal but then builds and builds to a massive crescendo. Plus I love anything James does so he will always influence my music.
