Psyence have released their new EP ‘Reality or Design’.
Out now via Black Belt Recordings, the five-track release includes recent singles ‘Tusk’ (former Love Music; Love Life Track of the Day) and ‘Retrospect’, alongside three new singles.
Speaking of the EP, the band said: “Reality or Design? Says it all really doesn’t it? Has this past year been real? Or is it just some hellish nightmare we’re all gonna wake up from soon? 2020 was without a doubt one of the toughest years many of us have ever experienced. Within our families and friends, there have been loved ones lost and new lives born, no gigs allowed, plans re-arranged, and then changed again.
In the void and when we were allowed to do so we re-grouped in our studio, which has become our safe haven from the madness. We immersed ourselves in creation, experimenting with our music, writing new songs, searching for the path forward. So we now proudly present to you our new five track EP, our response to a frustrating year for most and question once more, Reality or Design?”
To celebrate their EP release, we caught up with Psyence to discover 5 tracks that influenced ‘Reality or Design’.
Muse – New Born | Listen via Spotify
The dynamic of this track is on another level. From the melodic synth and bass duo at the start of which then explodes into that savage riff that sends you from 0 to 100 within seconds. Savage.
Idles – Model Village | Listen via Spotify
Fast paced and contemporary rock riffs, accompanied by nonconformist lyrics that make you want to march til the bitter end, this track demonstrates the fearless attitude we brought to the studio during the recording of ‘Reality Or Design’.
Monaco – What Do You Want From Me? | Listen via Spotify
The lyrics resonate with my current situation in life due to this pandemic ‘what do you want from me, it’s not how it used to be, you’ve taken my life away, ruining everything’.
The Vines – 1969 | Listen via Spotify
It shows a much heavier and darker side to one of the most influential indie bands of all time. Plus the opening lyric of “it’s 1969 in my head” rings true because we’re all holding on to the memories of better times given the current climate.
Arctic Monkeys – Pretty Visitors | Listen via Spotify
The quick-fire lyrics and the way they are delivered had a heavy bearing on our track ‘Dirty Gonzo. Seamless delivery is something we tried to emulate.
