TENDER | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Come Clean’

TENDER have released their new single ‘come clean’.

The track follows the band’s previous single ‘daydreamers’ which marked their comeback after two years.

Speaking of their new single, the duo explained the themes behind the track as: “When the walls feel like they’re closing in around you and life is getting the best of you. Being scared and wanting to give up. Asking for help when you need it.”

To celebrate the single release, the band shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Come Clean’,

Maribou State – Kingdom
We went for a similar verse kit and percussion feel. We wanted more of a clap or a click to replace the snare, with a fairly soft kick sound. Fitting with the chords and pads of our song, I think the kit somehow sounds like it was made from materials cobbled together from a jungle, despite being electronic in nature.

Bon Iver – 21 M◊◊N WATER
We like the really organic, but really breathy sounds through the intro of this Bon Iver track and I think we’ve done our own version of this with different source materials, but in a similar fashion where it sounds like a very modern and tasteful synth pad.

Billie Eilish – when the party’s over
Our original demo had this really claustrophobic and close vocal in the pre-chorus which was so up front and a bit unnerving. We then re-recorded all of the vocals through really high-end equipment, but for these sections it took away the magic, so we went back to the original sound for the ear pre choruses which at the time were making me think of Billie Eilish’s vocal takes when she’s just sat on her bed with a Shure SM7b.

DJ Shadow – The Number Song
It was exciting to bring a new flavour to the drums in the chorus of this track. I saw a great Fat Boy Slim documentary about his legendary Brighton Beach gig and since then I’ve been going back and listening to a bunch of big beat tunes. We wanted to incorporate a break beat feel to the drums, which I think really elevates our track. DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing’ record has been a long time favourite, and ‘The Number Song’ is probably the closest to our drums here. It’s all about those cymbals.

Beach House – Wishes
This track and album in fact, is a great example of using reverb tastefully. They’ve created such a lush sounding space with long reverb tails that sound natural and yet haunting. We’ve tried to open up the space in our track using short, sharp vocal samples underneath, soaked in reverb)
