Preview | Top 6 Edinburgh Fringe Music Experiences

From a silent walking disco tour to a mass karaoke night out, we take a look at the top 6 music experiences at the Edinburgh Fringe 2018.

There’s plenty of sit-down shows in every Fringe brochure, but what better way to embrace music than getting in amongst the action.

Whether it’s a tour with a difference or an immersive musical experience, we’re sharing our top unique musical adventures at the Edinburgh Fringe 2018.

Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tours
Aug 3-27 | Times Vary | Tickets £15

If you’ve visited the Fringe in recent years, you’ve no doubt spotted the mass dance along across the streets of the capital. Easily distinguished from the mass dancing crowd, you may have thought you’ve stumbled across an extremely amateur flash mob thanks to the out-of-tune singing (or shall we say shrieking) to no music and rather interesting unchoreographed freestyle dance moves. On arrival, you’ll be given a set of headphones to enjoy the commentary and dance-mix from the 70s to 00s. A totally unique Fringe experience bringing the silent disco on the move, let your inhibitions run free and dance the day away – but be prepared to get snapped and filmed en route as it’s a definite crowd-stopper. If you’re not too busy dancing, don’t forget to enjoy the added tour of the city on the way!

Dome Nights – Inspired by the music of Pink Floyd
Dates vary per album | 7.30pm / 9.30pm | Our Dynamic Earth | Tickets £12

Forget sitting back and listening to an album via your headphones with distractions aplenty, immerse yourself fully in the music with an interactive surround sound experience. Inspired by the music of Pink Floyd, Our Dynamic Earth will host exclusive shows in their Showdome featuring abstract projections and playbacks from Pink Floyd’s discography. From ‘The Wall’ to ‘Wish You Were Here’, two shows will take place each night with dates varying per album.

Massaoke Mixtape
Aug 2-5, 9-12, 16-19, 23-26th | 11.30pm | Assembly George Square Gardens | Tickets £12-16

Get your singing shower voice at the ready, it’s time to belt out some singles. Bringing a brand new show for 2018, if you’re not already familiar with the famed Fringe concept, Massaoke is a giant karaoke special featuring a live band. From mash-ups to megamixes taking you through the ages, you can sing along with strangers out loud without a care in the world as lyrics are screened on giant screens with songs blasting across the room. Better yet, you don’t have to stand up with all eyes on you as you undoubtedly shriek your way through the song holding onto the microphone for dear life, your bad singing will be buried away thanks to the crowd and the hands-free no-microphone approach will allow you to incorporate those all-important dance moves to unleash your inner popstar.

#Pianodrome Live
Aug 1-5, 8-12, 15-19, 22-26 | 7pm | Royal Botanic Gardens | Tickets £15

Watching a Fringe show in a pop-up theatre that vanishes into the abyss post-Fringe is a normal occurrence, but how about watching a Fringe show in a theatre made from upcycled pianos? Multi-instrumentalists S!nk will bring their unique show combining music, movement and more in the world’s first #Pianodrome! The 100-seat theatre is made entirely out of upcycled pianos and will pop-up in the Royal Botanic Gardens during the Fringe. If you’ve extra time, why not head along during the day as you can play for free on, in and around the theatre before its brought to life at night for the shows.

Edinburgh’s Greatest Hits – The Story of the Capital’s Music
Aug 4, 11, 18, 25 | 11am / 1pm / 3pm | Meeting outside NMS | Tickets £14

Whether it’s The Proclaimers or Young Fathers, you’re bound to have heard of some of the capital’s born and bred artists. Edinburgh has a rich musical history that was waiting to be uncovered and now you can discover the secrets of the stars on Edinburgh’s Greatest Hits Walking Tour. A must-have tour for music lovers, you’ll visit some of the city’s top venues where it all began. Better yet, it’s a cross-genre affair from jazz to pop with tours launching from the National Museum of Scotland to coincide with their new Rip It Up – The Story of Scottish Pop exhibition which you can also visit all Fringe!

Bongo’s Bingo
Aug 2-3, 9-10, 16-17, 23-24, 30-31 | 10.45pm | The Jazz House | Tickets £15

It’s difficult to encapsulate everything Bongo’s Bingo is in words. Our first experience was, admittedly, a slightly bleary night, but it’s one we’d do all over again. With one of the best nights out your bound we’ve ever had, Bongo’s Bingo reinvents the traditional game with a night of Bingo like no other. You’ll be given cards, the numbers will be called from the stage and prizes can be won – but Bingo etiquette goes right out the window when you’re dancing on the table to S Club 7 while aiming to win a box of Coco Pops. Make sure you wear sensible shoes as we can guarantee you won’t be sat down for long and the table will soon be calling your name…
